NAPOLEONVILLE, LA – U.S. Congressman Garret Graves met with Assumption Parish leaders and released the following statement. "In addition to our frequent outreach to Assumption constituents, we recently met with Police Jurors and other parish officials to discuss drainage and flooding and additional investments in Assumption Parish. One topic we covered was the new Bayou Chene structure to prevent backwater flooding in Assumption, Terrebonne, St. Mary and other areas, as well as how the funding we received to dredge the Atchafalaya River is helping to drain areas that were inundated for months. This follows previous on-the-water site surveys of Bayou Chene and the Atchafalaya we conducted last year with Parish officials. We also discussed the implications of converting massive agriculture lands into solar farms and the need to make sure this is being done in a way that is considering long-term implications on the tax base, farming and economic ramifications. Other important concerns discussed included the current challenges with funding of a robust fire service in Assumption Parish. We are going to continue working with the parish to identify grant opportunities and other solutions to address this shortfall," Graves said. "We also met with Sheriff Leland Falcon to get his thoughts on some of the growing challenges we are seeing with juvenile justice or the youth increasingly committing violent crimes. There are statewide challenges related to the inability to provide appropriate jails, a need for reform and overly strict federal requirements. Regular check-ins like this are so important to ensure we remain in sync with priorities and interests of the Assumption Parish and the people."
