Graves Announces Winners of 2019 Congressional Art Competition

Baton Rouge, LA – At the Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge this week, U.S. Congressman Garret Graves (R-Baton Rouge) announced the winners of the 2019 Congressional Art Competition. Winning first place was Ashlei Smith, a junior at Lee Magnet High School, with her mixed media painting entitled, "Creole Connection." Her artwork will be showcased in the corridor leading to the U.S. Capitol building for the next year.

"I knew we had talented students here in south Louisiana and I am blown away by these incredibly talented young artists. No doubt, their ability is due in part to the support of their dedicated parents and their extraordinary art teachers. It will be an honor to have "Creole Connection" represent the 6th Congressional District in D.C.," said Graves.

Each spring, the Congressional Institute sponsors a nationwide high school visual art competition to recognize and encourage artistic talent in the nation and more specifically in each congressional district.

Renee Chatelain, President/CEO of Arts council of Greater Baton Rouge added, "The Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge is honored to host the Congressional Art Competition. Congressman Graves' understands the vital role that art plays in the empowerment of students by recognizing their inspiring work and the guidance of their teachers."

While Smith's first place portrait will hang in the halls of the Capitol, the other winners will be displayed in Congressman Graves' other offices.
