BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Click here to see video. It's been a rough two years in our area since the August 2016 floods, but last week finally brought some good news when it comes to flood protection. The Comite River diversion project is now fully funded as part of $1.4 billion in flood mitigation money headed to the state from the federal government. Congressman Garret Graves, as chair of the Water Resources and Environment Subcommitee, pushed hard to get that money for Louisiana. Now, to be clear, the Comite diversion would not have prevented the 2016 flood. It would have just reduced water levels in some areas. Still, it's a much-needed project that will increase flood protection for much of our area. We applaud Congressman Graves and his fellow members of Congress who worked hard to secure this money for Louisiana. Now, we urge all of our state and congressional leaders to keep the pressure on and make sure the Comite diversion gets completed in the four-year timeframe they've promised. That's our turn. Now, it's yours. To comment on this or anything else, send us an email at yourturn@wafb.com. You can also stop by our Facebook page. |
