Before you donate to a charity, make sure you know where your aid is going. The Center for International Disaster Information recommends checking with a charity monitoring organization like GiveWell, Charity Navigator, Charity Watch, or the Better Business Bureau before donating.
Make sure your donation is secure by going through an organization's official website or sending a check in the mail. Charity Navigator says you should never donate over the phone, email or unknown social media pages, as these are easier for scammers to target. Organizations and coordinated efforts aiding Hurricane Harvey Flood Victims:Volunteer Houston has launched a VIRTUAL Volunteer Reception Center to aid non-profits and agencies in finding and deploying people to hard-site areas. The South Texas Blood & Tissue Center Texas-based Carter BloodCare (1-877-385-724) In addition we have heard from many of you on social media of other volunteer opportunities. 1) Baton Rouge: Cajun Navy 2016 is meeting at Costco in Baton Rouge at 9AM on Tuesday (8/29). Those that have boats, vehicles to transport supplies or donations, please show up. ##**Please post additional opportunities to help and we will update post. Many of our folks are still trying to recover from the August 2016 flood. Please keep in mind our rescuers and flood victims can always use your prayers.
